How to Go on a Personal Debt Reduction Diet

Whilst there are many things in life that are easy to buy, unfortunately, whenever it comes to ridding from our lives those things that are easily obtainable, the process becomes more difficult. For example, it's easy to eat foods that we like, however, whenever we try to lose this food in the form of excess weight, it can prove to be most difficult.

You know where this is heading, don't you? Yes, I'm about to give yet another example of something that's easy to obtain, yet even more difficult to reduce - it's credit debt! And that's because credit card companies are extremely proactive in foisting their hot new product offers on unsuspecting consumers on a daily basis. The problem is, numerous purchases, large balances and high interest rates can lead to financial ruin.

If you're unfortunate enough to find yourself in such a predicament, you'll need to take steps towards reducing your personal debt. You may, for example, consider the use of, (1) a credit couns eling service, or (2) embark on your own personal debt reduction plan. The second of the two is recommended most as you'll soon discover.

1) A Credit Counseling Service

Increased indebtedness these days, even for the average family is extremely prevalent. If you wish to undertake credit counseling, you will find these services in various places, none more so that the Internet. Do a simple search using Google.com with the keywords "credit counseling services" or "debt reduction services". Within a few clicks you can view several Websites where such services are provided.

The costs of credit counseling services vary from organization to organization. And so, too, do the methods employed by them to help individuals and families reduce personal debt. Some services will deal directly with creditors on your behalf to reduce interest rates on cards and loans, or negotiate a lower settlement to clear accounts. They may also assist with money manage ment counseling services. However, we recommend you go with a not-for -profit credit counseling service. For obvious reasons, these services charge lower fees for their work.

Just ensure that if you do engage a credit counseling service, that the organization in question is reputable, and they have been in business some considerable time - preferably years, and not simply months! As always, due diligence pays.

Do proper research about the company (even using the Internet) before you enter into any contract or agreement.

2) Personal Debt Reduction Plan

The other way to go on a financial diet is to engage in a personal debt reduction plan and do it all yourself. It's often argued that this is the best way to start a financial diet as it helps educate and instill good financial habits that help the individual stay out of indebtedness.

To begin with, try and ascertain your total indebtedness. Initially, this exercise can be extremely painful and revealing for the individual concerned, as they come to t erms with the extent of indebtedness. The second step is to keep a record of every penny you spend for a period of at least one month. This enables the individual to get a true picture of where their money going.

Finally, it's essential to identify the highest indebtedness based on the greatest interest paid, not purely on the balance owed. Once you've identified the highest interest debt, then you can target all of your available resources to eliminating the debt. Once that high interest debt has gone, switch your efforts and resources to the next highest interest debt. The net result of this approach is that debts clear quicker. Try it yourself!
